Sloped Panels
 |
Shed roofs have sloped sides and require us to cut the panels with a pitch. Shed roofs generally have either 3-sided or 2-sided exposures. The concept is the same for both. For 2-sided, just eliminate one of the sloped sides, below. If you are using tracking, your slope should be less than 1:12 ratio. If the slope is too steep, tracking will not work as it will either need to draw up hill or dump on the floor when you draw it down hill.
Often, pitched roofs have a header beam that runs level beneath the slope. Look at the diagram below. You'll notice that this 3-sided exposure when laid out can be divided into a lower rectangle and 2 right triangles in the upper wings of the diagram. We can cut triangle shapes. For clients that prefer tracking, we Velcro the triangle panels and track the rectangular panels. If you don't have a header beam, a 1" x 4" turned upright will do. The curtain and the track are light-weight. This pseudo header beam just needs to be wide enough to mount the 5/8" wide track and tall enough so it won't sag. For right triangles like these, we need only height (H1 - H2) and width (W1). |
|
For the example below, consider a 3-sided exposure. The RIGHT and LEFT sides are 8-0 wide (at the base) and the roof slopes from 107 inches tall at the house to 99 inches at the outer corners. The center exposure is 18-0 wide and level at 99 inches tall. You may choose to have a separate panel for each exposed side (3 panels) or, have two panels turn the corner and meet in the somewhere in the middle of the center exposure. If we were to take your entire project and lay it out flat, it would look something like this.
| We have indicated the required measurements. Note that WIDTH is the dashed line and NOT the sloped line. We only need rise and run for right-triangles. This particular example is symmetrical while your project may not be. You will definitely want to take measurements from different locations to ensure accuracy. |
